Spam and Scam Safe Twitter

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised.

Don’t Break Stories on Twitter: Reuters to Journalists

Friday, March 12th, 2010

Reuters has created a social media policy that attempts to address a number of online issues and offers instructions and recommendations wherever possible. The news agency has instructed journalists not to use social networking sites to break ‘disaster’ news since the Reuters journalists are to break it first through the wire.

The policy clearly shows Reuters being torn between supporting the usage of social media by its employees and a need to shield them from risk by exposing their sources and personal views that can easily be accessed through social sites like Facebook and Twitter. What remains to be seen is whether Reuters can maintain their hold of the top spot of the media race.

Social Media in Focus: ad:tech Singapore 2009

adtech 1

Social Media track with Lucy McCabe as the moderator. One of the most informative and entertaining sessions of ad:tech Singapore

Adtech’s 2nd year in Singapore had a keen focus on Social Media Marketing (not surprised, are you?), and the key points which led to this was the steady growth of mobile and Web users in this part of the world. This, in spite of compulsory monitoring software installation on all PCs in China, is heartening for marketers based in the APAC region.

Key points at the show were:

1) Case studies of successful social media marketing campaigns like Barack Obama, Accor Group hotel IBIS Bencoolen and co-branding opportunities in India by My Space.

2) Focus on measurement of traffic and various forms of online marketing, and how much they are worth

3) An interesting panel of young students who are keen social networkers, to see how they respond to traditional media

All the bigwigs such as MSN, Yahoo, Google, Nokia, FT, and Intercontinental Hotels were represented at the show, which is encouraging as well. However, Yahoo’s big bet on television felt a bit odd; either this failing Internet giant is on to something big or is in the path of self-destruction… only time will tell. There is no question that the APAC region is slightly behind the trends in the United States; but then, it makes it a good place for international marketers to share their expertise with this part of the world.

Blogs are here to stay

Monday, May 4th, 2009

Internet World 2009 bought about some interesting insights when it comes to social media:

1) Social media replicates real world. We recommend people we like, we stay away from things we don’t like. This is quite unlike the chat culture a few years ago where people would actually behave like someone they weren’t. So, safe to say, social media has oodles of honesty.

2) Just like we cannot assign value to person goodwill, it is difficult to assign a monetary measurement for the benefits accruing from social media.

3) Social media might still go through a sea change but it is here to stay. Businesses will need to work in creative ways to adapt it and might even result in change in the overall DNA of the business.

4) Don’t overuse social media. It does not get you brownie points… just don’t twitter to twitter. Avoid writing Facebook updates just because it is there. It is a good tool, use it judiously.

I am personally excited about the marketing potential of social media and think it can be an excellent platform to merge some existing forms. Watch this space for more info.
