Reuters has created a social media policy that attempts to address a number of online issues and offers instructions and recommendations wherever possible. The news agency has instructed journalists not to use social networking sites to break ‘disaster’ news since the Reuters journalists are to break it first through the wire.
The policy clearly shows Reuters being torn between supporting the usage of social media by its employees and a need to shield them from risk by exposing their sources and personal views that can easily be accessed through social sites like Facebook and Twitter. What remains to be seen is whether Reuters can maintain their hold of the top spot of the media race.
